The Shure SM57 is the greatest microphone of all time. Not only is it extremely affordable (around $100), it’s also tough enough to hammer nails with and sounds great on so many sources:
Guitars..
Drums (literally any drum)…
And even VOCALS. Can’t beat that for a great all-purpose microphone in your home studio.
They also last forever. I bought my first SM57 in 2004, and it’s still going strong after years of wear and tear in my studio and on stage.
The problem is that, when using the SM57 for vocals, people really miss the mark with EQ, and this is why so many end up discarding the 57 as a not-so-great choice for vocals…which is unfortunate.
The truth is that you can easily EQ your SM57 into a studio-quality vocal mic, and it only takes 3 simple moves to get the job done.
Also, the EQ moves in this video will work with any old stock EQ plugin within your DAW.
